A startup that has just completed a funding round and suddenly needs space for ten more people. Or a company that only needs a few flex desks now, but an entire laboratory six months from now. At building HTC 27 (High Tech Plaza), the beating heart of the startup and scale-up community at High Tech Campus Eindhoven, these are all-too-familiar situations.
The building is being completely refurbished and refitted for young technology companies that are right in the middle of such a dynamic phase. Anke Jutten and Jesper Beerens, both members of the Business Development team at Campus Site Management, make sure their workspace can keep pace as startups grow.

Both took a different path into the startup world. Anke joined the High Tech Campus Conference Center ten years ago and subsequently moved into Business Development. There, she realized that working with startups was exactly what she enjoyed. ‘They’re often led by ambitious people who really want to build something. I enjoy helping them take that next step and contributing to their growth.’
Jesper was already familiar with that world before he came to High Tech Campus Eindhoven. As an account manager at his previous employer, he helped startups and scale-ups find the right space on both the TU/e Campus and High Tech Campus Eindhoven. In addition, as a co-organizer of Demos, Pitches & Drinks, he built up a large network of entrepreneurs and innovators in the Brainport region. So when High Tech Campus Eindhoven asked him to bring that experience to the Campus, he didn’t have to think twice. ‘Why did I say yes? The variety. With more than 300 companies across 50 buildings, every day, every question and every solution is different.’

The start of a growth journey
High Tech Plaza (building HTC 27) doesn’t stand on its own. ‘Its real value comes from being part of the wider campus ecosystem,’ says Jesper. ‘We see this building as the start of a journey inside the HTCE ecosystem.’ That journey often starts small, but things can move incredibly fast. That’s why a first meeting is rarely about square meters. ‘We really focus on finding what best fits a company’s ambitions and growth plans. Because we work closely with many of the startups in our ecosystem, those conversations often start well before an investment is secured. Together, we can map out a solid workspace growth plan that aligns with the company’s hiring plans and anticipated growth. We often look one step ahead, so startups are ready to respond when things change. If they raise funding and the team suddenly doubles in size, that’s not when you want to start thinking about workspace,’ he says.
According to Anke, such a forward-thinking approach is necessary. ‘The early years of a startup are often pretty dynamic. Startups need room to grow, but sometimes they also need the flexibility to scale back, without being locked into fixed workspace costs. That’s why we’ve taken a close look at what startups really need today.’
You can see that reflected in HTC 27, where flexible workspaces and offices are ready to use from day one. And as fast-growing startups develop, they can also access labs and cleanrooms elsewhere on the Campus. Transparent all-inclusive rates and agreements starting at just three months make it easy to scale up or down quickly. Anke: ‘Companies often start small and then grow, and that growth can happen fast. Some companies grow so quickly that they have to expand several times a year. It helps to know that their workspace can grow with them, allowing the founders to focus on their business.’

The biggest advantage isn’t the space itself, but everything around it. On Campus, startups have plenty of opportunities to connect and learn from one another outside the workplace. At special startup events such as Lunch & Learn, the Gerard & Anton Awards and Demos, Pitches & Drinks, young entrepreneurs connect and share knowledge. Those direct connections can help startups grow faster and bring their solutions to market sooner.
But these events are just one way startups tap into the much broader ecosystem around them; the Campus is home to more than 300 companies, including over 100 startups. Anke: ‘We believe it’s important to offer startups the right workspace at every stage. But it is just as important that startups become part of an ecosystem in which they can learn, collaborate and grow. With so many different buildings and facilities, we can continue to support startups throughout their growth journey.’
